Linköping University

In close collaboration with the business world and society, Linköping University (LiU) conducts world-leading boundary-crossing research in many fields including medicine and information technology, with exemplars like the Center for Medical Image Science and Visualization (CMIV) and the National Supercomputer Centre (NSC).

CMIV is a multidisciplinary research center initiated by Linköping University, the regional healthcare provider Region Östergötland and the enterprise medical imaging company Sectra AB. CMIV conducts front-line clinical-native research within multidisciplinary projects providing solutions to tomorrow’s clinical issues. CMIV is host to the Analytic Imaging Diagnostic Arena (AIDA) which is a publicly funded collaboration arena for research and innovation in medical imaging diagnostics AI, engaging ~50 Swedish partners from academia, industry, and healthcare in about equal parts. It is also host to the AIDA Data Hub, which is a data infrastructure supporting AIDA with services in policy support, data sharing, and secure GPU processing of sensitive personal data for developing medical imaging diagnostics AI. CMIV also leads the development of the Bigpicture repository infrastructure that supports the collection and standardization of millions of European whole-slide pathology images and associated metadata, to enable development of novel AI tools for medical diagnostics and drug development. Bigpicture offers a centralized data repository, but is built so as to be easily extendable with further federated nodes as needed.

NSC provides leading edge high performance computing resources, and is host to the National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing in Sweden (NAISS) which provides high-performance computing, storage, and data services for academic users in Sweden.  NSC also has strategic partnerships with the Swedish aerospace and defense company SAAB, and with the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) and other Nordic meteorological institutes, to deliver compute capacities to produce the national weather forecasts. NSC also operates the Swedish flagship AI compute resource Berzelius.

For EUCAIM, CMIV will establish and operate a data platform based on Bigpicture federated node technologies, in collaboration with NSC and Berzelius.

Role of institution in the project

For EUCAIM WP6, the Linköping University Center for Medical Image Science and Visualization (CMIV) will establish and operate a data platform based on Bigpicture federated node technologies, in collaboration with the National Supercomputer Centre (NSC) and its flagship AI training resource Berzelius.

CMIV is also engaging to a smaller extent in EUCAIM work packages 1, 3, 4, and 5, for alignment, linkage and interoperability with other major European efforts Federated EGA, GDI, and Bigpicture.

Joel Hedlund

A doctor of bioinformatics, Joel is Data director to Linköping University Center for Medical Image Science and Visualization (CMIV) and the Analytic Imaging Diagnostics Arena (AIDA) which is a national publicly funded collaboration arena for research and innovation in medical imaging diagnostic AI. Here, Swedish academia, healthcare and industry run joint collaboration projects to translate technical advances in AI technology into patient benefit in the form of clinically useful tools. Joel also heads up the AIDA Data Hub, which is a data infrastructure supporting AIDA with services in policy support, data sharing, and secure GPU processing of sensitive personal data for developing medical imaging diagnostics AI. Joel also heads up the repository infrastructure development for Bigpicture, the European flagship project in digital pathology AI which will collect and standardize data from millions of whole slide pathology images to support development of AI tools for clinical diagnostics and drug development.

Pontus

Pontus has worked in various roles within software development and operations and support. He has designed and built cloud software services, clusters for high performance computing and services to support research on sensitive data. His heart beats a bit extra for end users and he likes doing outreach and community involvement as it gives him the chance to learn what's missing for new groups to be able to take advantage of services. He is currently working as an IT architect at CMIV, Linköping University.
