Umeå University

Umeå University was founded in 1965 and is Sweden’s fifth oldest university. Today, it has a strong international presence with students, teachers and researchers from all over the world. With 37000 students from 60 countries the aim of the university is to continue becoming one of best environments for study and research and meet the challenges of an ever-increasing global society. Umeå University is one of Sweden’s most comprehensive universities within all areas of scientific research and education. The research takes place on a broad scale in order to compete in the international arena. The university conducts ground-breaking research within several areas e.g. Life science, Medicine, Gender research, Biological Chemistry, Ecosystem Dynamics, Energy, Infections, Plant and Forest Biotechnology and Social Welfare Research. It is also a hub for research in AI and also in ethics in AI. Furthermore, Umeå University has a strong and established interdisciplinary interest in sustainability. The medical faculty is the largest faculty at the university, with research in the forefront in radiation treatment, prostate cancer, neuroscience including imaging and paediatrics especially in preterm born and nutrition. The environment for clinical research is good and has received highest score in international evaluation. Our centrum, Molecular infection medicine Sweden (MIMS.umu.se) is partner in Nordic EMBL node and we are also one of four parts in Wallenberg Center for molecular medicine (WCMM) in Sweden. WCMM conducts research in cancer, infection biology, neuroscience and metabolic disorders including diabetes and is part of a nationwide effort to strengthen molecular life science in an initiative by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW). Other funded research from KAW are the large projects WASP-AI, WASP-HS and Data driven life science (DDLS) that foster fellow researchers and build research infrastructures for the aimed research. The university and university hospital are physically located side by side and the structures for collaboration is very well developed.

Role of institution in the project

UmU is mainly involved in WP7 Use cases for platform expansion and validation, which is led by professor Katrine Riklund but UmU will also contribute to tasks T1.3 Engagement with Cancer Care professionals and patient associations, T3.2 Ethical compliance, T4.4 Central storage and development infrastructure, T5.3 The EUCAIM Data Preprocessing tools and services and WP8 Business & Sustainability models.
