Istituto Europeo di Oncologia

The European Institute of Oncology (Istituto Europeo di Oncologia, IEO) is a leading comprehensive cancer center based in Milan, Italy. Established in 1994 by the visionary Italian oncologist Professor Umberto Veronesi, the IEO has since become one of the most advanced institutions dedicated to cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and research. Its mission is to provide high-quality patient care, conduct groundbreaking research, and foster education and training in oncology.
IEO is internationally recognized for its patient-centered approach, which integrates multidisciplinary teams composed of oncologists, radiologists, surgeons, pathologists, and other specialists. The institute offers state-of-the-art treatments for various types of cancer, including breast, lung, gastrointestinal, urogenital, and gynecological malignancies. Notably, the Breast Imaging Division, is at the forefront of breast cancer diagnosis and intervention, implementing cutting-edge imaging modalities and artificial intelligence (AI) tools to enhance accuracy and efficiency.
The IEO Model is based on an innovative, research-driven clinical workflow where personalized medicine is prioritized. Advanced imaging techniques, molecular diagnostics, and genomic profiling are routinely integrated into patient management to offer tailored therapies that maximize efficacy while minimizing side effects. The institute is also a pioneer in minimally invasive and robotic surgery, particularly in oncologic procedures, reducing recovery times and improving patient outcomes.
IEO is committed to translational research, bridging laboratory discoveries with clinical applications. The institute hosts several research programs focusing on oncology, precision medicine, artificial intelligence in imaging, radiotherapy advancements, and immunotherapy. It collaborates with national and international institutions, and multiple academic and industry partners.
Through collaborations with the University of Milan, the institute contributes to postgraduate education, fellowships, and residency programs. Additionally, IEO organizes scientific conferences, workshops, and symposia, facilitating knowledge exchange and fostering the next generation of oncology specialists.
As a center of innovation, IEO continues to shape the future of oncology by leveraging cutting-edge technologies, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and maintaining a strong focus on patient well-being. Its dedication to advancing the field makes it a key player in the global fight against cancer.

Role of institution in the project

The European Institute of Oncology (IEO) will play a central role in the EUCAIM project, bringing extensive expertise in breast imaging and mammography. The team will use high-quality, annotated mammographic datasets, essential for developing and validating AI-driven tools for breast cancer detection and characterization. IEO’s experience in multimodal imaging, AI validation, and clinical workflow integration ensures that EUCAIM advances precision medicine, fostering a robust, federated infrastructure for AI-enhanced mammography and early breast cancer diagnosis across Europe.

Filippo Pesapane

Filippo Pesapane works as a radiologist at the Breast Imaging Division of the European Institute of Oncology (IEO) in Milan, Italy. He holds certifications from the Italian University, the UK General Medical Council, and the Swiss Confederation. His clinical and research activities focus on advanced imaging techniques, artificial intelligence (AI) applications in radiology, and explainable AI for diagnostic decision support. Dr. Pesapane obtained his National Academic Qualification as Associate Professor in 2020. He has contributed extensively to scientific literature, authoring numerous peer-reviewed publications. His contributions to radiology research earned him recognition in the top 2‰ of most-cited researchers worldwide, as per Stanford University’s 2023 and 2024 citation rankings. His contributions to the field have been acknowledged with awards such as Radiology Rising Star (EuroMinnies 2019) and Paladino della Salute (Italian Government, 2024). Dr. Pesapane has been a member of the Editorial Board of European Radiology Experimental* (European Society of Radiology Journal) since 2021. He is a frequent speaker at international conferences, including, and is deeply committed to advancing AI integration in medical imaging while ensuring ethical, transparent, and effective implementation in clinical practice.

Martina Lo Cascio

Martina Lo Cascio is a Data Analyst Specialist at the European Institute of Oncology (IEO). She has a master degree in Statistics at Bologna University. As part of the Information Systems team in the data area, she is involved in data projects on the IEO's CDP, the Institute's health data lake as well as in other analytics applications. Together with the Institute's stockholders, clinicians and researchers, we build data driven solutions (Data Product) to archive context needs and to extract value (insight) from clinical and research data. Through Artificial Intelligence tools (GenAI, NLP, XAI, synthetic data, LLM, ...) we analyse clinical, (multi)omics and real world (RWD) data collected in clinical practice, research and follow-up.
