Highlights from EUCAIM’s sessions at ECR 2025
Wednesday, February 26th
EUCAIM User Training Demonstration: Engaging with Cancer Image Europe led by Hanna Leisz (DKFZ)
This demonstration provided attendees with a hands-on experience of how we train and support researchers, clinicians, and AI developers for navigating Cancer Image Europe.
EUCAIM’s offers a tailored Learning Management System using Moodle based user profiles. The training courses are designed to guide users through the platform and provide a public introductory course for new users, including the registration process.
Session: AI for Health Imaging – Transforming Cancer Diagnosis and Analysis
This packed session highlighted achievements from groundbreaking projects CHAIMELEON, and EuCanImage, as well as EUCAIM and the FUTURE-AI. Our EUCAIM representative, Prof. Heinz-Peter Schlemmer, emphasized how EUCAIM is addressing radiology’s AI-era challenges, ensuring AI is seamlessly integrated into clinical workflows alongside human expertise.

Meet the EUCAIM Leadership at the EIBIR Booth
Attendees had the opportunity to interact with Prof. Luis Martí-Bonmatí (Scientific Coordinator), Peter Gordebeke (Project Coordinator), and Mario Aznar (Sustainability Lead). This open discussion format allowed for engaging conversations about EUCAIM’s goals, progress, and next steps.
Session: The EUCAIM Project – Building an AI-Driven Future for Cancer Diagnostics
This session showcased EUCAIM’s impact and progress, with insightful presentations from key leaders within the project.
Prof. Luis Marti-Bonmati indicated that EUCAIM is deploying the Cancer Image Europe platform to unlock imaging biomarkers for precision medicine. AI offers an optimal solution for the imaging biomarkers pipeline, but collaboration with experts and harmonisation pathways is crucial.
Prof. Ignacio Blanquer Espert highlighted that the technical components of Cancer Image Europe are in place. The dashboard serves as the entry point to different services, such as a catalogue with datasets and federated search. With 57 datasets and 27 searchable terms integrated, EUCAIM ensures compliance with EHDS standards through three federation levels.
Prof. Katrine Riklund pointed out that a highly successful open call has expanded EUCAIM’s reach, bringing in new partners from Norway, Latvia, and Estonia. As the platform continues to grow, it is solidifying its role as the platform for cancer images and AI.
Mario Aznar concluded that EUCAIM addresses three critical challenges: access to high-quality, high-quantity datasets, better utilization of underexploited data, and the need for dedicated infrastructure to support large-scale AI-driven studies. Sustainability is key: ensuring long-term impact and ownership of results will shape the future of cancer imaging research.

Dr. Leonor Cerda demonstrated the benchmarking framework, which enables standardized AI model evaluation within Cancer Image Europe.

Prof. Ignacio Blanquer provided a detailed walkthrough on how users can request and access imaging data via the Cancer Image Europe dashboard.
Studio Session: From Fragmentation to Integration – EUCAIM’s Impact on Cancer Imaging and AI
Giana Tsakou, co-lead of EUCAIM’s Data Federation & Interoperability activities, outlined how EUCAIM is addressing data fragmentation and interoperability challenges, establishing a robust framework for AI-driven imaging research.
