University of Pisa

The University of Pisa (UNIPI), founded in 1343, is among the oldest and most prestigious universities in Europe. The University of Pisa has participated in 206 European projects under Horizon 2020 and other European programs (during the previous European program cycle, i.e., from 2014 to 2020) and it has coordinated 51 European projects.

In this project UNIPI is represented by the Department of Translational Research and New Technologies in Medicine and Surgery, it is one of the main departments of the medical area of UNIPI. The Department includes the following academic units: Clinical Oncology, Surgery, Pathology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Internal medicine, Radiology, Radiation Oncology and Clinical Pharmacology. Those academic units are also part of the Imaging Department of the Pisa University Hospital.

Role of institution in the project

The Team of UNIPI has developed expertise on oncologic imaging biobanks, on the development and validation of imaging biomarkers and in the application of AI in medical imaging. The team is involved in multiple EU projects and clinical trials on the application of radiomics and radiogenomics in oncologic imaging. The experience gained and the connections developed in these fields will be strongly leveraged to the successful accomplishment of this project. Furthermore, UNIPI will help to identify potential new use cases, reach new data providers and it will contribute to recruit and possibly expand the panel of the stakeholders.

Prof. Emanuele Neri

Prof. Emanuele Neri is Full professor of Radiology at the Department of Translational Research and New Technologies in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Pisa. He is President of the school of medicine, Chair of the Unit of Academic Radiology, Chair of the Post-graduate School of Radiology and he leads the ImagingLab Laboratory (http://imaginglab.med.unipi.it/). He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from University of Pisa in 1994 and then, he joined the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology at University of Pisa as Assistant Professor of Radiology. He spent most of his scientific/research career in the field of imaging informatics, and oncologic imaging. The most recent activities have been focused on the development and validation of imaging biomarkers, imaging biobanks and artificial intelligence.

Prof. Dania Cioni

Prof. Dania Cioni is Associate Professor at the University of Pisa, Division of Radiology, Department of Surgical, Medical, Molecular Pathology and Emergency Medicine. Professor Dania Cioni graduated in Medicine and Surgery from University of Pisa in 1997. According to the SCOPUS database, citations of her publications currently number in excess of 3,900, for an h-index of 30. Professor Cioni spent most of her scientific research career in the field of liver lesions with the following activities: Ultrasound, ultrasound contrast agent, new ultrasound 3D software in the study of liver lesions and arterial vessels; Optimization of computed tomography protocols for the study of liver tumors and in their evaluation after treatments; Interventional radiology in lung and liver tumors; New magnetic resonance imaging techniques and contrast agents for the study of liver tumors and in their evaluation after treatments; Radiomics of liver lesions.

Dr. Lorenzo Faggioni

Dr. Lorenzo Faggioni is Assistant Professor at the Department of Translational Research and New Technologies in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Pisa. He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from University of Pisa in 2004 and obtained the PhD degree with a thesis titled “Health Technologies: evaluation and management of innovations in the biomedical field” in 2011. He is currently President of the Imaging Informatics Chapter of SIRM and Member of the Oncologic Imaging Chapter of SIRM. Dr. Faggioni’s main research interests include Imaging informatics (with main focus on artificial intelligence, radiomics, structured reporting), oncologic and cardiovascular applications of CT and MRI, optimization of CT acquisition protocols. To date, he is author of more than 80 articles published in indexed journals and reviewer for the journals Academic Radiology, European Radiology, European Journal of Radiology, European Journal of Radiology Open, Insights into Imaging, Investigative Radiology, Journal of Computer Assisted Tomography, La Radiologia Medica, PLOS One.

Dr. Giovanni Aquaro

Dr. Giovanni Aquaro is Assistant Professor, division of 1st Unit of Radiology, Department of Surgical, Medical, Molecular Pathology, and Emergency Medicine, University of Pisa. He is member of the European Society of Radiology (ESR), European Society of Cardiac Radiology (ESCR), Italian Society of Medical and Interventional Radiology (SIRM), Italian Society of Cardiology (SIC) and European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI). Chairman of the Chapter of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance of SIC for the years 2015-16. Dr. Aquaro’s main research interests include cardiovascular imaging, imaging application of basic science and technological development in radiology (new contrast agents, coils, pulse sequence). To date, Dr. Aquaro has published more than 225 scientific articles indexed on Pubmed with an H-index of 35 (Scopus database).
