Medical University of Gdańsk

The Medical University of Gdańsk (MUG) is the largest medical university in northern Poland. According to the 2021 higher education ranking of the Perspektywy Education Foundation, the MUG is the first medical school in the country. It ranks among the top ten best Polish state universities (8th place). For many years the MUG has been consequently realising its development strategy in research & innovation by grant-searching and directly overseeing research projects. The main achievement and confirmation of its leading role in research is the MUG faculties’ objective position in independent parametric analysis. The Ministry of Science and Higher Education ranked the MUG’s Faculties with the highest possible grades (A, A+). In 2019 MUG was also selected by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education as Research University, which resulting increased funding for world-class research development (only 10 Universities in Poland gained this title). GUMed’s scientists have published over 14.906 papers in international journals, amounting to an overall impact factor of 15 281,896 (2016-2020). They were also granted over 23 patents and applied for another 44 (2016 – 2020). MUG has extensive experience in preparing, implementing and managing projects financed from external sources. University is also active in European Framework Programmes, participating in five H2020 projects and two Horizon Europe projects, many in oncology and cancer imaging.

Role of institution in the project

GUMED will provide expertise in radiology, cancer imaging, oncology, AI and radiomics. The team has extensive experience in use case definitions, drafting clinical and technical requirements, data models and ontologies, and international data sharing. GUMED will use experiences gained in the EU-funded EuCanImage and RadioVal projects and AI4HI network to support various tasks in WP 2, 3, 5 and 7. GUMED and UMU will co-lead T7.2 with the definition of Platform Use Cases that will be used to validate the EUCAIM platforms functionalities.

Maciej Bobowicz

Maciej Bobowicz, MD, PhD, is an assistant professor at the Second Department of Radiology, Medical University of Gdansk. He leads the WP5 work package focusing on the multicentric clinical evaluation of predictive AI tools in the RadioVal project. He also leads a clinical work package WP2 in the HORIZON 2020 European Commission-funded project ‘EuCanImage - A European Cancer Image Platform Linked to Biological and Health Data for Next-Generation Artificial Intelligence and Precision Medicine in Oncology. His speciality is surgical oncology, and he deals with different types of cancer but focuses mainly on breast and colorectal disease. He is an enthusiast of the responsible use of artificial intelligence in medicine, particularly cancer imaging. His other fields of interest are artificial intelligence in oncology, radiomics, bioinformatics, process automation in radiology, precision medicine in oncology, and new cancer diagnostics and treatment technologies.

Prof. Edyta Szurowska

Professor Edyta Szurowska, MD, PhD, is the Head of the Second Department of Radiology at the Medical University of Gdansk and the Department of Radiology at the University Clinical Centre. Her main interests relate to oncologic imaging and neuroradiology. In oncologic imaging, her particular focus is on lung cancer, head and neck tumours, and abdominal neoplasms. Professor Szurowska’s principal research concerns brain imaging, lung cancer screening, liver and gastrointestinal cancers diagnosis and staging with CT and MRI techniques. Professor Szurowska is the author of more than 120 papers in international and national journals, and she has been the invited speaker in more than 200 national and international lectures. Since 2016, Professor Szurowska has been the Vice-Rector for Medical Affairs at the Medical University of Gdansk. She remains a practising radiologist, carrying out many consultations and holds a very active position within the hospital.
