The value of medical imaging data extends far beyond individual institutions.
By making imaging datasets discoverable and reusable within a common European framework, their scientific potential can be significantly enhanced, supporting broader collaboration, validation, and innovation across the research community.
Through participation in EUCAIM and contributions to the Cancer Image Europe Platform, NEUROMED is helping make high-quality oncological imaging data available to researchers across Europe while maintaining the governance, privacy safeguards, and ethical standards required for secondary research use.
For NEUROMED, EUCAIM has enabled the transformation of institutional cancer imaging collections into structured datasets that can be discovered and reused within a European research infrastructure, substantially increasing their scientific value.
The collaboration with EUCAIM has also provided valuable practical experience in data de-identification, clinical metadata harmonisation, dataset creation, and catalogue preparation within a European federated research infrastructure. This work has strengthened NEUROMED’s capacity to prepare imaging resources for large-scale collaborative research while ensuring high standards of quality and interoperability.
NEUROMED has contributed with three cancer-specific PET/CT datasets to the EUCAIM infrastructure:
- Lung cancer PET/CT cohort: 183 subjects / 183 studies
- Breast cancer PET/CT cohort: 63 subjects / 63 studies
- Prostate cancer PET/CT cohort: 52 subjects / 52 studies
The datasets include anonymised PET/CT imaging together with associated harmonised clinical metadata. During the onboarding process, the clinical information was reviewed and standardised to ensure consistent pathology classification, timepoint definition, and linkage between imaging and clinical data. The three cancer-specific datasets have been created and transferred through the UPV Reference Node.
Beyond expanding the volume of available imaging studies, NEUROMED is committed to continuously improving the quality, structure, and interoperability of its associated clinical data. With EUCAIM, cancer imaging data can be more effectively leveraged for research, fostering collaboration and accelerating the development of innovative tools that can ultimately benefit patients across Europe.
Looking ahead, NEUROMED expects these datasets to support future multicentre research activities involving quantitative PET/CT imaging, image analysis, and AI-based methods, helping researchers generate new evidence and advance precision oncology across Europe.
NEUROMED has now been confirmed as legally compliant within EUCAIM, has achieved Tier 1 status, and is ready to continue its progression across the EUCAIM tier framework.
