EATRIS

EATRIS is the European Infrastructure for Translational Medicine. It is a non-profit organisation that brings together resources and services for research communities to translate scientific discoveries into benefits for patients. Users are given access to a vast array of expertise and facilities from over 145 top-tier academic centres across Europe. EATRIS focuses on improving and optimising preclinical and early clinical development of drugs, vaccines and diagnostics, and overcoming barriers to health innovation. Find out more at https://eatris.eu/.

Role of institution in the project

EATRIS co-leads WP7 on Use cases for platform expansion and validation and will work together with hospitals, academic medical centers, image data providers and other AI innovators – such as industry partners, research institutes, etc. – on the identification of the use cases that will drive the design, implementation and validation of the infrastructure. EATRIS will also contribute to align the work done in WP7 with WP2-4-5-8.

Sara Zullino

Sara Zullino is the Scientific & SME Outreach Manager at EATRIS. She is responsible for promoting the development of strategic scientific infrastructure projects defined by the EATRIS 'Imaging and Tracing' Platform, and supporting ongoing management and cohesion of translational imaging infrastructure and expertise. She is also responsible for coordinating the team's outreach activities to SMEs to foster new scientific and public-private collaborations. Sara joined EATRIS from the Molecular Imaging Center of the University of Torino (Italy), where she developed workflows for image data archiving and analysis through the integration of the open-source imaging informatics platform XNAT with in-house tools for preclinical Magnetic Resonance image processing. She was involved in several European projects under the auspices of Euro-BioImaging ERIC, such as CORBEL and EOSC-Life, and contributed to infrastructure strategies and procedures to align preclinical and biomedical image data to FAIR principles. Sara received an MSc in Biomedical Engineering from Sapienza University of Rome (Italy), and a PhD in Complex Systems for Life Sciences from the University of Torino. Her main research focus was the development and acoustic characterisation of novel phase-change contrast agents for ultrasound imaging. Sara co-leads WP7 together with Katrine Riklund.

Gary Saunders

Gary Saunders is the EATRIS Data Director. He is responsible for leading the EATRIS data strategy over the next scientific programme (2023-26). As part of this work Gary will lead the EATRIS core data team and work with key data focussed initiatives such as the Horizon Europe Mission Areas, European Open Science Cloud, and the 1+ Million Genomes. Gary joined EATRIS from ELIXIR where he was the Human Data Coordinator responsible for the implementation of the ELIXIR-wide strategy to enable responsible sharing of human data consented for reuse in scientific research. Previous to ELIXIR Gary was based at EMBL-EBI where he was the data manager for the European Variation Archive (EVA), and the Database of Genomics Variants Archive (DGVa). Gary has a PhD in Bioinformatics from the University of Glasgow, UK, and has a background in comparative genomics.
