Heidelberg University Hospital

Heidelberg University Hospital (UKHD) is one of Europe’s leading university hospitals, renowned for its advanced patient care, cutting-edge research, and academic excellence. It fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and drives innovation across 50 medical departments, spanning a wide range of clinical and research fields. More than 13,500 employees share the ultimate goal of improving patients’ lives.
Within UKHD, the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology (DIR) fosters a collaborative environment that unites scientists from diverse fields and medical professionals. Key focus areas include lung and cardiovascular imaging, abdominal imaging and interventional radiology, musculoskeletal imaging, oncologic imaging, and pediatric imaging, with additional expertise in computational image analysis and medical physics. These efforts, supported by major funding agencies such as BMBF, DFG, and the EU, emphasize translating research findings into tangible clinical benefits. The DIR participates in multiple national and international collaborations, including SOLACE, DZL/TLRC, NAKO, RACOON, PERMED COPD, and LYSIM CANCER, and has most recently joined the EUCAIM consortium.

Role of institution in the project

UKHD is involved in Work Package 7 as a use-case. In its role as a Data User, it will further train and validate an AI-based algorithm that uses deep-learning segmentation and radiomics-based “virtual biopsies” for the detection and assessment of advanced-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Prof. Dr. med. Hans-Ulrich Kauczor

Prof. Dr. med. Hans-Ulrich Kauczor has been Full Professor and Chairman of Radiology at Heidelberg University Hospital since 2008, also serving as Medical Director of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology. Since 2018, he leads the Translational Lung Research Center Heidelberg and sits on the Board of Directors at the German Center of Lung Research. His primary research focuses on structural and functional thoracic radiology, utilizing CT and MRI, which have led to the development of innovative, world-renowned diagnostic methods for lung and tumor diseases.

Dr. Bettina Katalin Budai

Dr. Bettina Katalin Budai is a postdoctoral researcher at DIR UKHD leading a newly forming interdisciplinary research group focused on the development of deep learning-based image analysis tools to support automated assessment targeting a diverse range of pathologies in the context of body imaging. She holds an MD, and a PhD degree in Clinical Science from Semmelweis University, Hungary, with a specialization in artificial intelligence and radiomics analysis in abdominal imaging. In 2024, she was awarded a fellowship in the Medical Data Scientist Program at the Medical Faculty of the University of Heidelberg with the aim of identifying prognostic imaging biomarkers in colorectal cancer patients.
