The Institute for Health Sciences in Aragón

The Institute for Health Sciences in Aragón (Instituto Aragonés de Ciencias de la Salud, IACS) is a public research institution in Aragón, Spain, dedicated to advancing health sciences through research, innovation, training, and knowledge transfer. Its main mandate includes biomedical and health research, conducting and promoting scientific studies to improve healthcare practices and medical knowledge. It also focuses on innovation and technology transfer, supporting the development and implementation of new healthcare technologies and innovative medical solutions.

The institute provides training and education for healthcare workers, researchers, and public health professionals. Another key area is health system support, assisting the regional healthcare system by evaluating policies, improving clinical practices, and optimizing healthcare management. The IACS also fosters collaboration and partnerships with national and international research institutions, universities, and healthcare providers to enhance scientific progress and healthcare solutions.

The IACS is mandated to operate the BIGAN platform, the Aragón region health data lake for secondary use. BIGAN is regulated by regional law and contains all clinical data produced in the Aragón Health System, including claims data, prescriptions, vaccinations, laboratory tests, and medical imaging, acting as a regional Health Data Space. Since its launch in 2018, BIGAN has provided data access to over 40 research projects annually.

Role of institution in the project

In the EUCAIM project, IACS will pursue the seamless interoperability of the BIGAN and EUCAIM platforms. The IACS team’s expertise in establishing this platform and its participation in the European Health Data Space construction discussions will be essential for the project’s success.

Juan González-García,PhD.

Juan is the Biocomputing Unit Manager and Head of Health Data Strategy Aragon Institute of Health Sciences. Juan obtained his PhD in Computer Architecture from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia – BarcelonaTech. He has developed a solid career in data analytics, simulation and performance analytics of parallel applications in world-class research centers such as the Barcelona Supercomputing Center and the IBM T.J Watson Research Center. In his current position, Juan is aligning the parallel a distributed computing fundamentals to develop new big-data-based methodologies on real-world data analytics and exploring new research lines on how cognitive computing interacts with health systems research, personalized medicine and personalized care. Juan has participated and coordinated in multiple national and international competitive projects (HealthyCloud, TEHDAS, PHIRI, BY-COVID, QUANTUM,...). He has been instrumental to the development of the European Health Data Space technical substrate and the European Open Science Cloud Health Data Task Force.

Carlos Tellería-Orriols

Carlos has an MSc in Physics and Electronics and a degree in Computer Sciences. He has worked for over two decades in the development and management of Health Information Systems and health data integration architectures. He is the responsible for the development and operation of the BIGAN platform. He has actively participated in several national and European projects, including “Towards European Health Data Space” (TEHDAS), HealthyCloud, and Quantum, where he leads the work package piloting the Data Quality and Maturity tool within the context of the European Health Data Space. He will assume the technical leadership of the BreastScan project, configuring the federated architecture of EUCAIM for the use case of federated training of models to enhance breast cancer screening.

Jesus Ibáñez-Ruiz

Jesús holds a bachelor's degree in Computer Science and a Master's degree in Artificial Intelligence, Pattern Recognition, and Digital Imaging. He is currently a Senior Research Support Specialist at the Biocomputation Unit of Aragon Health Sciences Institute (IACS), where he focuses on data analysis and system administration. As part of his role, he supports and extracts knowledge from data for European projects such as HERVCOV. Not only does he contribute significantly to managing the infrastructure which enables the acquisition and analysis of healthcare data, but he is also working to provide support for decision-making in the local healthcare system. Previously, he built a solid career as a full-stack developer, where he designed and implemented scalable software solutions and led many teams in the successful execution of complex projects.

Irene Sanchez-Montejo

Irene is a Data Scientist in the Biocomputing Unit at IACS. She obtained a degree in Computer Science from the University of Zaragoza in 2019, and subsequently earned a Master's in Biomedical Engineering from the same institution in 2021. Her expertise lies in health informatics, systems administration, data analysis, and machine learning. Currently, Ms. Sanchez-Montejo is specializing in Natural Language Processing (NLP) within a clinical context as part of her PhD candidacy in Computer Science. Her research endeavors concentrate on applying NLP techniques to enhance healthcare data processing and analysis, thereby contributing to advancements in data quality for medical informatics and Artificial Intelligence in healthcare.
